How Much Cake Do I Need for My Party? A Simple Guide for Birthdays, Baby Showers, and Weddings

One of the most common questions I receive is:

"What size cake do I need?"

Whether you're planning a birthday party, baby shower, graduation, wedding, or family gathering, ordering the right amount of cake can feel confusing. You want enough for everyone to enjoy, but you don't want to end up with an overwhelming amount of leftovers.

This guide will help you choose the right cake size for your celebration.

Start With Your Guest Count

Before choosing a cake design, think about how many people you'll be serving.

A good rule of thumb is to order cake based on the number of guests you expect to attend not the number you invite. Most celebrations have a few no-shows, especially larger events.

If you're unsure, it's usually better to have a little extra cake than not enough.

Birthday Party Cake Serving Guide

For birthday parties and casual celebrations, servings are often slightly larger than wedding servings.

Here are some common serving estimates:

6-Inch Cake

Serves approximately 15–20 people

Perfect for:

  • Small birthday parties

  • Family celebrations

  • Intimate gatherings

8-Inch Cake

Serves approximately 25–30 people

Perfect for:

  • Children's birthday parties

  • Baby showers

  • Small graduation parties

Two-Tier Cakes

Serves approximately 35–50 people depending on tier sizes

Perfect for:

  • Larger birthdays

  • Quinceañeras

  • Bridal showers

  • Anniversary celebrations

Wedding Cake Serving Guide

Wedding cake slices are typically smaller than birthday cake slices, allowing a cake to serve more guests.

When planning a wedding cake, consider:

  • Total guest count

  • Whether you'll also serve other desserts

  • If you'd like leftovers

  • Whether you're saving the top tier

Many couples choose a smaller display cake paired with cupcakes or sheet cakes to serve additional guests while staying within budget.

Should I Order Extra Cake?

I usually recommend ordering for a few more guests than your final count.

Extra cake often becomes:

  • Late-night snacks

  • Take-home slices for family

  • Breakfast the next morning (no judgment here!)

Running out of cake is remembered much longer than having a few slices left over.

Don't Forget About Other Desserts

If you're serving:

  • Cupcakes

  • Cookies

  • Brownies

  • Cheesecake

  • Dessert bars

You may be able to order a slightly smaller cake since guests will have multiple dessert options to choose from.

This is especially common at weddings and larger celebrations.

When in Doubt, Ask Your Baker

Every cake is different. Height, number of layers, and serving style can all affect how many people a cake will feed.

The goal is simple: making sure everyone gets a delicious slice while creating a cake that fits your celebration perfectly.
