One of the questions I occasionally get asked is:
"Why do you bake everything from scratch?"
The simple answer is that I believe the people we love deserve food made with care.
But the longer answer is a little more personal.
When I started Silver Drop Cakes, I knew I wanted to create desserts that were more than just sweet treats. I wanted to create something that helped people celebrate birthdays, graduations, weddings, baby showers, and all of life's meaningful moments.
Those moments matter.
And when something matters, I believe it's worth doing well.
For me, baking from scratch is part of that commitment.
What Baking From Scratch Means
When we say our desserts are made from scratch, we mean that we start with individual ingredients rather than relying on pre-made mixes or ready-to-use products whenever possible.
That means measuring flour, sugar, eggs, butter, and other ingredients ourselves to create each recipe.
It takes more time.
It takes more effort.
And it definitely creates more dishes.
But we believe the results are worth it.
It's About More Than Taste
Most people assume baking from scratch is only about flavor.
And yes, flavor absolutely matters.
But for me, it goes deeper than that.
Baking from scratch allows me to know exactly what is going into the desserts I serve my customers.
It allows me to make intentional choices about ingredients and quality.
It allows me to create products that I feel proud to serve to my own family.
Because if I wouldn't serve it to the people I love most, I don't want to serve it to my customers either.
A Book That Changed How I Think About Food
A few years ago, I read a book that had a significant impact on how I think about food and ingredients.
The book was The Poison Squad by Deborah Blum.
The book tells the story of the early fight for food safety in the United States and the efforts of pioneering chemist Harvey Washington Wiley, who helped expose dangerous food additives and push for consumer protections that many of us take for granted today.
Before reading it, I knew food regulations existed.
After reading it, I gained a much deeper appreciation for why they matter.
The book reminded me that consumers deserve transparency about what they're eating and that the quality of ingredients matters.
It also encouraged me to pay closer attention to the choices I make in my own kitchen.
Progress, Not Perfection
I'll be the first to admit that no bakery is perfect.
There are ingredients I would love to upgrade someday.
There are products I'd love to source differently as my business grows.
Small businesses often have to balance quality, affordability, availability, and customer expectations.
But I believe progress matters.
Every year, I try to learn more, improve more, and make better choices where I can.
Why It Matters to Our Customers
When someone orders a cake for a birthday, wedding, graduation, or baby shower, they aren't just buying dessert.
They're trusting us to be part of an important memory.
That trust means something to me.
It's why we put care into every order.
It's why we focus on quality ingredients.
It's why we bake from scratch.
Not because it's the easiest way.
But because it's the way that best reflects what Silver Drop Cakes stands for.
Celebrating Life's Sweetest Moments
At Silver Drop Cakes, our mission has never been simply to make desserts.
Our goal is to help people celebrate, connect, and create memories around the table with the people they love.
And for us, baking from scratch is one small way of honoring those moments.
Because every celebration matters.
And every memory deserves something made with care.
